ToonDoo.com is an online comic-creating tool that lets you customize online games of educational value for children of all abilities. You can also create your own comic strips. Another similar site is Pixton.com, where you can design your characters and move them around. You can sign up or a free or paid account; they also have school accounts that can link up with Smartboards or Promethean Board. You can even create comics that can be re-edited by others. Both are great and easy to use.
Check this out:
mention several of my son's favorite places to
visit. I am not sure if Scratch is considered 2.0,
but it's a great program that is from MIT and it's
a free download. You can design your own
comics with audio and share them with others.

Lastly, anyone with a kid probably knows about
ClubPenguin.com, the online community for kids
where they create accounts, their own penguins,
and learn how to navigate around a virtual world.
They can interact with their friends and play
games and buy things. Webkins is similar, except
that characters are associated with actual stuffed
animals that can be bought in stores.

There are some great sites here! I will have to tell my neighbor who has two young kids who love computer games. THANKS! -- Todd

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these sites with us. It is hard to keep up with the latest and I love to hear what others are doing or learning. I use ComicLife at school quite a bit, but to be able to have the characters move is a whole new dimension. We are getting 2 new Promethean boards installed in my LMC, so I would love to have some great 'stuff' up my sleeve!! I will definitely be checking these out.

These are some great suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI haven't used Moof.com. I'm wondering how they handle copyright issues. I will go and check it out.
Are all of these sites you mention available in your school? How much of a problem is the school blocking things you want to use?
Keep up the great writing!
oooh, I like the way moof shows the youtube video for any songs that you play! i'm gonna spend some time on this site! :-)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips on websites you have found. My daughter (high school) asked me why I was hogging the PC at home. I told her I was blogging about Web 2.0. She said oh then turned back and asked a good question. What is Web 2.0? I had to stop and think (can't let her know her dad doesn't know) what is it exactly? What was Web 1.0? I told her that web 1.0 was regular, get information get off. It was all about the search engine. Then people became more social on the internet and they wanted to share and be seen by others. People have parts of the internet a place where they can't do anything else.
Here was my example: if you wanted to have your own radio show you would have to go to journalism school or college and study communication or become a morning show lackey until you got a show of your own. This method takes years, and many don't make it. Along comes Podcasting and Boom you can have your own show with relatively no overhead it will take your time but while your putting in time you are doing what you wanted to do.
YouTube is the same. How do half the people on TV get on TV? If you have the desire and a good camera you can get on a sort of TV.
Your suggestions are definitely Web 2.0.
Great work, Becky! I am very excited to see Web 2.0 tools that I have never heard of before! I am very excited to check out Moof! It always scares me to see how much music I have and what would happen if I lost it all :( Also, I have heard about Club Penguin, but I never knew what it was. It sounds like a lot of kids would really enjoy playing that, and besides...who doesn't love penguins!? :) And yes, webkins are SO popular right now! Many of my students had like five. They were so excited when new ones came out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tips, Becky!
I like that ToonDoo.com. I will use this with my students. I currently use Makebeliefscomix.com and Comic Life with my student, so ToonDoo.com is one more I can add. Thanks you for the info!
